The knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League fixtures are tonight and a lot of entertainment is expected as we should see some feisty encounters coming into this one.
Bayern Munich welcome Atletico Madrid home to the Allianz Arena knowing that only victory will be able to help them win this game considering that Atletico picked up the victory at home last week. The Bayern faithful have gone off the boil in terms of their offensive firepower in recent weeks, but that is all due to Guardiola who has been rotating his squad considering their domestic title is all but secure. Guardiola knows that he needs to unleash all guns blazing offensively, but he will have to do it without iconic winger Arjen Robben who is out with a groin injury. Attention than turns to new signing Douglas Costa and Ribery on the wings to give support to Lewandowski and Muller up front. Bayern will have to work hard to break down the stubborn defence of Madrid, much like they had to against Juventus after going 2-0 down early in the first half. Defensively is where Bayern has been struggling over the last week and will continue to be difficult with injuries to Benatia and Badstuber.
Atletico Madrid are the typical underdogs, even though they hold a 1-0 lead coming into this encounter. Manager Diego Simeone has made this team an extremely tough nut to crack which has seen them now keep 6 clean sheets in a row including against Bayern and Barcelona during that span. Coming into this encounter they will have been sufficiently rested coming into this encounter with Simeone rotating the squad but still managing to pull out a late victory. Offensively they have relied on a combination of players like Koke, Torres, Griezmann, Carrasco to contribute on the scoring, and they will continue to feel the pressure to score a single goal and then protect the lead, much as they have over their last 6 games.
This game will be a very tactical and technical one, but I expect both teams to come with the front foot forward to seal that early goal to sign off with victory, and I expect both teams will find the back of the net at some point tonight.
