We are back to club league football action starting this weekend with FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
Roma as the world have been raving about since the signing up of Spalletti as manager and they have now managed to put out a 6 match winning streak heading into this critical Friday night fixture against rivals Fiorentina. In fact it was the dropping of points of Fiorentina against Napoli that has seen Roma overtake them into 3rd spot; level in points but goal difference putting Roma ahead.
Roma has seen a glut of goals flowing their way since Spalletti is on board where they have now netted 18 goals in their last 6 Serie A games alone. The offence has been well led by Salah, Dzeko and El Sharaawy who have scored 4 goals each during this run that has led them to 3rd spot in the table. The midfield of Roma has been extremely solid giving support to the front 3 with the likes of Pjanic, Nainggolan and Keita sitting as a perfect foil to defend as well as counter attack when the opportunity rises. If there was an area Roma had to improve upon it would be defensively, where they have conceded a goal in 4 out of those 6 games.
Fiorentina come into this encounter having dropped 6 points in their last 7 games, which could have seen them narrow the gap at the top, or at least hold on to 3rd spot by themselves. Draws to lowly sides Genoa and Bologna as well as fiesta draw against Napoli on Monday night saw them lose control of 3rd spot. What is really to appreciate about Fiorentina is their sense of attacking and that too counter attacking really quickly. With the likes of Kalinic and Jilic, they have a front 2 who have scored 21 goals among them while having Babacar off the bench to also support their offence. The midfield boast some talented players like Alonso, Valero, Fernandez, Blaszczykowski, Tello, Vecino and Badelj who provide a lot of support and pace to the front 2 to attack quickly on the counter. Fiorentina have now netted goals in 5 straight games, winning 3 and drawing 2 of those encounters. Defence has been a bit shaky conceding in each of those 5 games; so that could be crucial especially when travelling to an in-form Roma.
This game has all the makings of an exciting encounter with just like it was with Fiorentina taking on Roma. These 2 teams have met 5 times in 2015 across various competitions, with all of the games having a minimum of 2 goals, but this season it takes extra special importance as they are fighting for outright control of 3rd spot; so I expect both teams to go for it hammer and tongs from the first whistle, and we could see a good goal fest as we saw in in the October meeting between the 2 sides.
